CCEC has asked the Minister responsible for Canada Post to reconsider the recent proposals from Canada Post to close out all urban home delivery of the mail over the next 5 years. Some 5 million households will be directly affected, with mail redirected to 'community mailboxes'. The letter to Minister Raitt notes that on social and environmental grounds, the proposals transfer costs to the public rather than truly reducing costs. Seniors and the disabled are likely to be the most affected, but so will anyone who relies heavily on paper-based communications (often required for financial business). Many are objecting to the announced Canada Post proposals, ranging from the Canadian Union of Postal Workers to the National Association of Major Mail Users.

This is an update from the Vancouver Society of Storytelling. They held their  AGM on March 9, 2014 and were looking for new board members, in particular a Treasurer.

Great News!  Volunteers stepped forward to be part of the Board including a person who can fulfil the role of Treasurer.

The organization supports the art of storytelling and storytellers in the Lower Mainland area, mostly in Vancouver.  Among other things we put on a festival every two years - June 2014 is the next one.  Storytelling as both a performance art and a community activity is alive and well in our city, thanks in part to the efforts of the VSOS to foster its development in many ways.

Meetings are once a month for 2.5 hours. This is a working board! As such, there will be tasks associated with the "business arising" at each meeting. Sitting on the board averages to about 5 hours a month of work. These short five hours mean so much for the health of the organization and a strong board is what will allow us to continue developing and delivering relevant, entertaining programming.

A plan of succession is in the works, but a minimum of one or two years' commitment on the Board is encouraged.

If you would like more information, please contact Melanie Ray at or Naomi Steinberg  or you can call Melanie at 604-874-3519

Our AGM will be on Sunday March 9th, from 1-3 at the Alliance for Arts and Culture, #100 - 938 Howe Street, VancouverA fun opportunity to kibbitz with the storytelling community and hear about the workings of the organization in the past year; there will be (as always) delicious snacks and an entertaining story or two.
